Oman's Jan-Nov Gas Consumption Jumps 5%

Oman’s natural gas consumption increased by five percent during the first 11 months of 2015, according to National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) data.

Consumption grew to 36,261million cubic metres (mcm) during the January–November period this year, against 34,535mncm in the corresponding period of 2014, Muscat Daily reported Sunday citing the NCSI data.

The biggest drivers of demand growth have been industrial and power generation sectors.

Industrial gas usage increased by 3.4 per cent to 19,856mcm, while use of natural gas in power generation rose by four per cent to 7,811mcm.

Total gas supplies, which are made up of domestic gas production and imports, stood at 36,261mcm during the first eleven months of this year, up five per cent from the same period of 2014, Muscat Daily reported.

Projections of sharp increase in domestic gas demand has compelled Muscat to look for sources to import gas. Oman is expected to start importing gas from Iran in few years via an undersea pipeline.
