ONGC, Greenko plan green hydrogen project in India

State-owned energy company ONGC has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hyderabad-based Greenko to jointly pursue opportunities in renewables, green hydrogen, green ammonia and other derivatives of green hydrogen, it said on July 26.

They will jointly develop a 1mn metric tons/year green ammonia production and storage facility in the country for export purposes, Greenko said in a separate statement. The companies aim to produce green ammonia through a 1.3 GW green hydrogen plant leveraging Greenko’s exclusive partnership with John Cockerill.

The project will require about 6 GW of solar and wind power coupled with Greenko’s pumped-hydro energy storage platform to generate 1.4 GW of round-the-clock renewable power, Greenko said.

ONGC said that the MoU will also act as a stepping stone for the company to achieve renewable energy targets as per its Energy Strategy 2040.
