Osaka Gas tests 30% hydrogen-fuel mixture in Japanese cogeneration system

Osaka Gas has conducted a demonstration test in Japan of a 30% hydrogen-fuel mixture combustion with city gas in a cogeneration system manufactured by Yanmar Energy Systems, the company announced on July 5.

The test utilised the cogeneration system installed at the testing facility at Osaka Gas’ Carbon Neutral Research Hub Annex at Torishima. The hydrogen equipment was supplied by Osaka Gas.

Osaka Gas confirmed that the existing cogeneration system can be operated with the same rated power output and power generation efficiency as when it runs on city gas alone, even with a 30% hydrogen fuel mix. This was achieved with almost no changes to the existing cogeneration system.

The demonstration test was conducted on the EP400G cogeneration system, which is already on the market for use with city gas. Using hydrogen with adjusted flow rate, the system achieved the same low NOx emissions and stable combustion as when operating on city gas alone. This was accomplished without changes to the hardware or control software, other than the hydrogen supply equipment, Osaka Gas said.
