Oz Pair Find Gas at Queensland Well

Australian players Comet Ridge and Vintage Energy have identified gas at their Albany-2 well in Queensland’s onshore Galilee basin.

Downhole wireline logs indicate good reservoir quality and the presence of gas within several sandstone sections of the target reservoir, Comet said in an ASX stock filing on September 17.

Comet owns an 85% stake in the Galilee Basin Deeps Joint Venture (GBDJV), with Vintage holding the remaining interest. The result at Albany-2 builds on the success of the pair’s Albany-1 well, which struck gas in June last year. This first borehole achieved a stabilised flow rate of 230,000 ft3/day from a 13-metre interval in a sandstone reservoir.

Logging operations measured pressure at Albany-2 over the past week before being halted after the tool got stuck in the hole, Comet said. Once the tool is retrieved within the coming days, the company said it would run in cement casing to prepare for further evaluation work in the fourth quarter.

The Ensign Rig 932 used to drill the well is now being moved to Albany-1, where it will begin sidetracking work by late next week, Comet said. The company expects to conduct production tests at both Albany-1 and Albany-2 by year-end.
