Pakistan Plans Gas Storage Facilities: Report
Pakistan is planning to build underground gas storage facilities in various parts of the country, The News reported October 5.
Spokesman for ministry of energy (petroleum division) Sher Afghan told the newspaper that state-owned Inter-State Gas System (ISGS) will work on the project. He said that like oil storage facilities, the government wants the gas storage facilities as strategic gas reserves.
Pakistan has many depleted gas fields where gas storage facilities can be built, another government official told the newspaper. Initially, Bokhari and Kharewl gas fields in the province of Punjab are the ones which the government is looking at. The official said that the government is discussing the issue with Gazprom and a delegation from Russia is expected to visit Pakistan by end of this month.
Demand for gas in Pakistan has been rising in recent years, especially in power generation as more gas fired power plant come online. The south Asian nation started importing LNG in 2015 with the commissioning of FSRU Exquisite, located at Port Qasim near Karachi, which has storage capacity of 150,900 m3 and a peak regasification rate of 745mn ft3/d (7.7bn m3/yr).
