Pakistan, Turkmenistan Looking at Second Gas Pipeline Project

According to a report published in The Express Tribune newspaper, Pakistan and Turkmenistan are looking to discuss a second gas pipeline project.

The Pakistani daily reported Tuesday that this pipeline would pass through the Afghanistan-Iran border to connect with the Gwadar port.

An official familiar with the development said the Interstate Gas Systems (ISGS) had submitted a concept paper to Turkmenistan around two months ago, discussing the laying of an additional gas pipeline.

“The Pakistan government would set up an LNG re-gasification plant at Gwadar port to convert this gas into LNG,” the official told The Express Tribune.

Pakistan is already a part of much delayed TAPI gas pipeline project which was formally inaugurated on Sunday. The Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) is being hailed as great example of regional cooperation. Nearly 200 kilometers of TAPI pipeline will pass through the territory of Turkmenistan, 735 kilometers through Afghanistan, 800 kilometers through Pakistan and will reach Fazilka in India.

Pakistan is facing severe energy crisis and looking at various sources to buy gas.
