Paragon RNG begins commercial operations at North Carolina landfill

Paragon RNG, a joint venture of GFL Environmental and OPAL Fuels, has begun commercial operations at its latest renewable natural gas (RNG) project in North Carolina, the partners said October 7.

The facility, at the Sampson County landfill in Roseboro, North Carolina owned by a subsidiary of GFL, is now producing and injecting pipeline quality RNG. OPAL Fuels will operate the facility and dispense the RNG as fuel for GFL’s fleet and other transportation customers.

The project is the second completed by Paragon RNG, a joint venture formed by GFL and OPAL in 2021 to pursue the development of two landfill-based RNG facilities. The first, at GFL’s Arbor Hills landfill in Michigan, was completed in June 2023 and produces about 2.5mn mn Btu/year of RNG, or about 20mn gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE)/year.

The Sampson County project will produce about 1.6mn mn Btu/year of RNG, or about 12.4mn GGE/year.

“This facility at our Sampson landfill will play an important part in achieving our commitment to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions from landfills, while providing an alternative fuel source that can power our trucks and help our customers achieve their own sustainability goals,” GFL CEO Patrick Dovigi said.

The Sampson RNG facility is the 10th developed by OPAL Fuels and increases the nameplate capacity of OPAL’s facilities to some 7.8mn mn Btu/year, said Adam Comara, co-CEO of OPAL Fuels.

“This project also demonstrates our continued focus on expanding RNG production by working with best-in-class partners like GFL to bring more renewable fuel supply online,” he said. “These RNG projects combined with our integrated downstream fuel station segment providing that fuel back to GFL fleet and other downstream customers creates a win-win-win for our partners and the communities they serve.”
