Polish Shale Gas Resources May Be Significantly Lower than Previously Estimated
An assessment of undiscovered shale gas resources in Poland by the Polish Geological Institute (PGI) produced in cooperation with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) will be published on the 21st of March according to Poland's Deputy Minister of the Environment, Piotr Wozniak, who was answering interpellations in the Polish parliament (Sejm).
Mr. Wozniak admitted that the figure of technically recoverable gas resources will be lower than the 5.3 TCM given last year in the global survey published by the Energy Information Administration. Natural Gas Europe learned unofficially that the number may in fact be significantly lower.
The methodology used in calcuations may play a role in any downward revision.
Previously published estimates of shale gas resources in Poland range from 1 TCM to over 5 TCM. According to several sources, the new assessment by PGI/USGS is likely to be closer to the former.
The report was initially to be released in September but has been repeatedly postponed. The Institute did not exclude that the report would also include an estimate of the possible shale oil reserves in Poland.
