PM Modi Inaugurates West India Terminal

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi September 30 inaugurated GSPC LNG’s Mundra LNG terminal, located in the western Indian state of Gujarat. Modi also inaugurated the Mundra-Anjar pipeline project and the Palanpur-Pali-Barmer pipeline project, the prime minister’s office said the same day.

The 5 million metric tons/yr terminal at Mundra has been developed by GSPC LNG, which is a joint venture between Gujarat state-owned GSPC and private sector firm Adani. The regasified LNG from the terminal shall be evacuated by the 67 km Mundra-Anjar pipeline, which further connects to the existing Gujarat State Petronet’s gas grid.

“Gujarat is emerging as an LNG hub of India,” Modi said. Mundra terminal will be the third LNG import terminal in Gujarat. The western Indian state already has two operational terminals, one operated by Petronet LNG and the other by Shell. India has two more import terminals-Gail operated terminal at Dabhol in the state of Maharashtra and Petronet's second terminal in the southern Indian port city of Kochi.

With LNG demand expected to further rise, India is working on building more import terminals. A few of them are expected to come up on the east coast as well.
