Poland Firmly Backs Shale Gas

In an interview for Polish Radio 1,  Bronislaw Komorowski expressed his strong support for the development on shale gas despite ongoing "black propaganda" aimed to hamper the diversification of Poland's energy sources.

The Polish President made his comments in advance of the 17th Meeting of Presidents of Central European States.  US President Barack Obama is expected to attend a working dinner this evening as part of the summit.

Komorowski said that the role of Polish and American administrations could be to make sure that business linked to shale gas extraction can flourish.

President Komorowski said that “an element of Polish-US administrative cooperation could make sure that black propaganda does not get in the way of any possible [shale gas] investments.”

The comment echoes those of Poland's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, who have alluded to special interests heavily influencing a French decision to implement a ban on hydraulic fracturing.

Comments by Polish officials are thinly veiled references to the atomic and environmentalist lobbies and Russian gas exporter Gazprom.

However, President Komorowski conceded that it is still too early to talk about energy security in the context of shale gas.
