Budapest Business Journal: Orbán supports Poland plan for EU energy union

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was in Poland this week to meet with his counterpart Donald Tusk on various issues headlined by energy security. Promising to make the Tusk government’s proposal to establish a pan-European energy union a “major subject for discussion” at the next meeting of Visegrád Four (Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia) leaders, Orbán stated at a press conference that “We support this initiative.”

Tusk first raised the idea of an energy union in late March at the onset of the Ukraine/Russia conflict. The PM’s plan would establish the European Union as a single bloc in negotiations with suppliers such as Russia in order to avoid what Tusk has called “gas blackmail.”

“Every proposal aimed at overcoming the energy monopoly can count on our support,” Orbán said in support of the plan. “We are talking about diversification of sources, diversification of delivery directions, diversification of energy carriers, so that no monopolist can impose unfavorable prices, because the competitive European economy is at stake here,” Tusk emphasized.
