Qatar Could Set up Land Based LNG Terminal in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s minister for trade said March 6 that Qatar is interested in setting up a land-based LNG terminal in the country, according to Dhaka Tribune.

Minister Tofail Ahmed further said that the government plans to set up a number of terminals across the country so there is no gas crisis by 2018. Tofail met with Qatari ambassador in Dhaka March 6.

In the last 12 months, Bangladesh signed multiple LNG terminal deals. Excelerate signed an agreement with Petrobangla last year. An agreement for second FSRU was signed in January between Petrobangla and local private sector firm Summit Group. Petrobangla also signed an agreement with Indian Petronet LNG for a land based import terminal. 

The minister stated that Bangladesh will have to import about 182.5bn ft³/yr of LNG from Qatar to meet daily deficit of 500mn ft³. Because of the rising domestic demand for gas, the government has been working actively to source LNG from international markets. To make the import process easier, a lot of emphasis is being laid on infrastructure.
