Luxemburger Wort: Reducing the EU's energy dependence
Luxembourg Vice-PM and Economy Minister Etienne Schneider on Friday said that the EU should work on reducing its energy dependence and not only diversifying its sources of energy.
The bloc's energy security strategy should look into continously diminishing energy consumption with 10, 20 and 30 year goals, Schneider said at an EU meeting in Luxembourg on June 13, which discussed, among other issues, the gas crisis between Ukraine and Russia.
Schneider commented that every year, Europe spends four times the EU budget on fossil fuels. A systematic and gradual reduction would contribute towards energy security, he argued.
