ReFuels breaks ground on new bio-CNG refuelling station in Scotland

ReFuels, a Netherlands-based bio-CNG (biomethane) supplier, has commenced construction on a new refuelling station in Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland, the company announced on August 21. The public access station, operated under the CNG Fuels brand, will support low-emission transport between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Once fully operational, the Livingston station will be capable of refuelling 14 trucks simultaneously, with a daily capacity to serve over 600 trucks and an annual capacity of 20mn kg of bio-CNG. CNG Fuels also operates Scotland’s first public access renewable biomethane refuelling station for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) off the M8 near Bellshill, which opened in 2021.

CNG Fuels’ existing UK network of 14 stations can refuel more than 9,500 HGVs daily, with an annual dispensing capacity of over 290 million kg of biomethane. This could potentially save more than 800,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year compared to diesel use, according to the company.

ReFuels aims to expand its network to 30-40 stations by the end of 2026, with a total capacity to refuel up to 23,000 HGVs per day and dispense more than 650mn kg of biomethane annually.

The Livingston station is owned by a joint venture with Foresight Group. In addition to Livingston, ReFuels is constructing another station in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, one of the UK's largest logistics hubs.
