SNP Welcomes Report on Scotland’s Offshore Unconventionals
The Scottish National Party (SNP) welcomed a new report from the business organisation N-56 suggesting that Scotland could take advantage of offshore unconventionals.
“This new report shows the strong possibilities in offshore unconventional and hard to reach oil and gas, and shows that when combined with existing reserves Scotland could have almost double the oil and gas reserves we previously thought,” SNP Energy Spokesperson, Fergus Ewing MSP, said in a note released on Thursday.
According to the report, unconventional developments in the Upper Jurassic Kimmeridge Clay formation could add an estimated 21 billion barrels of oil and gas.
The SNP said that, despite UK’s ability to focus its attention on unconventionals, Scotland has the right to benefit these new opportunities.
“What is crucial is that Scotland has the powers of independence to ensure that it is the people of Scotland that benefit from these riches – not the Westminster Treasury that squanders them,” Ewing stated.
The note also reports that the business organisation suggests that both the UK and Danish Governments are carefully considering this opportunity.
