RINA, Eni to work on energy transition, decarbonisation in maritime transport

Classification society RINA has partnered with global energy company Eni to develop initiatives that will contribute to the energy transition and decarbonisation, with a specific focus on maritime transport, Eni said on May 29. Through this collaboration, RINA and Eni will combine their expertise to promote sustainable practices within their respective operations.

The agreement centers on the utilisation of HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oil) biofuel produced by Eni in its Venice and Gela bio-refineries. The partnership will also explore the application of other energy carriers, such as blue or green hydrogen and ammonia, derived from renewable, biogenic, or waste materials that do not compete with the food chain. These sustainable energy sources will be employed in the naval sector.

Furthermore, the collaboration encompasses the development of initiatives to enhance the logistics and value chain of new energy carriers, along with the adoption of certified methods to accurately measure the emissions reductions resulting from these efforts.

Eni and RINA will also consider conducting experiments and pilot projects related to the onboard capture of CO2 emissions, further advancing sustainability goals within the maritime sector.

Eni aims to leverage this partnership to study and develop sustainable solutions for maritime transport in the short, medium, and long term. By catering to the needs of shipowners and logistics operators, Eni seeks to make the industry more environmentally friendly while driving the transition to sustainable maritime practices.
