Russia Ramps Up Gas Supplies to China

Russia has supplied record volumes of gas to China via the Power of Siberia pipeline, Gazprom said on November 20 in a statement.

“In October and the first twenty days of November, the daily average volumes exceeded the contractual amounts upon requests from the Chinese party. On November 12, the surplus in daily volumes hit a record high of 25%,” Gazprom said without giving details of actual volumes supplied.

Power of Siberia has been pumping gas from the Chayandinskoye gas field since December 2019. It is due to deliver 5bn m3/year of gas this year, or around 13.7mn m3/day, under Gazprom's 2014 supply contract with China's CNPC. Shipments are due to ramp up to 38bn m3/yr by 2025, by which point Chayandinskoye will be joined by another field Kovyktinskoye.

In line with the sales and purchase agreement, Gazprom is preparing to further ramp up the gas supplies next year. The parties are also exploring the possibility of increasing gas deliveries via the Power of Siberia pipeline by an additional 6bn m3 after the supplies under the existing agreement level off.

Russia is also looking to supply gas to China via the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline across Mongolia, via the western route, and from the Far East.
