Russia, Ukraine Agree to Continue Gas Talks

Russia and Ukraine have agreed to continue working on options for continuing the transit of Russian gas via Ukraine next year, Yuriy Vitrenko, executive director at Ukrainian state energy firm Naftogaz, wrote on Facebook on December 13.

Vitrenko posted the announcement after meeting with Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller in Vienna. He cautioned that it was too early to talk about a new transit agreement.

In its own terse statement on the talks, Gazprom merely said the pair had discussed co-operation in the gas sector in 2020.

The current long-term transit contract between Gazprom and Naftogaz is due to expire on December 31 2019, leaving the two companies just over two weeks to agree new terms for next year.
