Samsung Heavy Delivers LNG Shuttle Tanker to Teekay

Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has delivered the world's first LNG dual-fuelled shuttle tanker to Norway’s Teekay Offshore, it said last week.

The 130,000 dwt shuttle tanker, named Aurora Spirit, will operate on LNG as the primary fuel, and a mixture of LNG and recovered volatile organic compounds as secondary fuel, Samsung Heavy said. The shuttle will operate in the North Sea.

“Increase in demand for eco-friendly vessels is inevitable due to stricter environmental regulations,” a company official said.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has enforced a new 0.5% global sulphur cap on fuel content from the beginning of this year, lowering from the present 3.5% limit. The global fuel sulphur cap is part of the IMO’s response to increased environmental concerns, contributed in part by harmful emissions from ships.
