San Leon: Lewino Validates Baltic Basin Potential
The chief executive of San Leon Energy believes that strong gas shows from the Lewino 1G-2 well drilled on the Gdansk W concession in northern Poland’s Baltic basin confirm the potential of the shale play, indicating “there is definitely gas throughout the whole system”.
Oisin Fanning told Upstream that San Leon’s three Baltic basin partnered with Talisman Energy are estimated to hold between 4 trillion and 6 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves.
“The (Lewino 1G-2) well has further shown there is substantial in-place gas potential. The issue now is not whether gas is present but is a mechanical one - that is, how to liberate the gas from the shale rock through fracking,” Fanning said.
Hydraulic fracturing or 'fracking' procedures need to be conducted in order to enhance recoverable gas volumes.
Weather and technological issues with fracture stimulation procedures have proved challenging for San Leon’s fellow Polish shale gas explorers, Saponis Investments and 3Legs Resources.
