Santos' GLNG Starts Second Production Unit

Santos on Thursday announced that GLNG train 2 has started producing LNG on Curtis Island, Queensland, Australia.

The announcement follows first LNG production from train 1 in September 2015 and GLNG’s first LNG export cargo in October 2015. The first cargo was carried by the Malaysian-owned LNG ship Seri Bakti and was delivered to South Korea.

Santos Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Gallagher said first LNG from train 2 was another milestone for GLNG and marked the successful delivery of the two-train project, which has already produced over two million tonnes of LNG and shipped 32 cargoes.

“GLNG train 2 start-up adds to Santos’ LNG portfolio, which also includes the Darwin LNG and PNG LNG projects,” Gallagher said.

GLNG produces natural gas from Queensland’s coal seams and converts it into LNG. It involves gas field development in the Surat and Bowen Basins, a 420-kilometre gas transmission pipeline and the two-train LNG plant with capacity to produce 7.8 million tonne of LNG per year when fully operational.

Santos is the operator and has a 30 percent interest in the project. Other co-venturers are PETRONAS, Total and KOGAS.
