Scania launches biomethane-powered engine
In a move geared towards advancing sustainable transport solutions, Sweden-based heavy-duty vehicle and powertrain manufacturer Scania has unveiled a biomethane-powered version of the OC13 13-litre engine, it said on December 8.
The new biomethane-powered OC13 engine is designed to provide a more environmentally friendly option for long-haul operations, offering a 5% improvement in fuel efficiency. Paired with two-thirds of the Super-based powertrain, these engines deliver the necessary range for extended journeys.
“Biomethane fuels are definitely the solution for those customers who want to start a decarbonisation journey without any delay,” said Ola Henriksson, senior product manager for renewable fuels at Scania Trucks. “Our biogas engines cover a wide span of industries and applications. A 40-tonne tractor-and-trailer combination can achieve ranges of up to 1,400 km when specified with the biggest Bio-LNG tank solutions that we offer. Add the 460 hp and the 2,300 Nm our OC13 engine offers to the equation and you have a perfect tool for European long-haul.”
Scania underscored the growing interest in locally produced biomethane fuels for trucks, such as bio-LNG or bio-CNG. The accessibility of biomethane-based solutions through expanding fuel-station networks contributes to the appeal of these engines. From a well-to-wheel perspective, Scania noted that CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 90%, further supporting the case for embracing biomethane as a cleaner alternative in the heavy-duty vehicle sector.
