WSJ: EU Official Urges Hungary to Involve EU in Russian Gas Talks
The European Union’s top energy official said Tuesday that Hungary and Russia should involve the bloc’s executive in talks on their long-term gas contracts, as the bloc works to integrate national energy markets.
Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban was hosting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest on Tuesday. The two leaders have previously made deals that the EU’s executive, the European Commission, has said may have breached the bloc’s competition and energy-market rules.
“Ideally the commission should be part of the negotiating team,” EU energy commissioner Maros Sefcovic told The Wall Street Journal. “One of the key elements for energy security first should be much higher transparency.”
