Serbia Performs Rapid U-Turn On South Stream

Serbia could change its position on the South Stream project over pressure from the European Union, as suggested by a statement by Serbian Prime Minister Aleksander Vucic.

According to Kyiv Post, Vucic said it “makes no sense” to start building activities. The statement would represent an extremely rapid U-turn.

On Tuesday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dacic said that “there is no problem regarding the South Stream because our country wants its construction.

Vucic’s statement follows the publication of a memo from the European Commission, which asked the country to align with the EU ‘in particular in the fields of energy.’

On Monday, the EU’s next foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said that South Stream project, which was previously defined an important project for Europe, requires a different political climate.
