China's Shanxi province produces record unconventional gas in H1

During the first half of the year, Shanxi province in north China achieved a record output of 6.82bn m3 of unconventional natural gas, up 5.7% compared to the same period in the previous year, state-owned Xinhua news agency reported on July 25.

Shanxi is not only known for its significance as a coal province in China but also for its rich resources of unconventional natural gas, which includes coalbed methane, tight sandstone gas, and shale gas.

As of the end of 2020, the province had accumulated a total proven geological reserve of unconventional natural gas exceeding 1.06 trillion m3.

In line with its 14th five-year development plan (2021-2025), Shanxi aims to establish itself as a national unconventional natural gas base, as reported by Xinhua.

Over the past few years, Shanxi has seen a notable and rapid increase in unconventional natural gas production. The output rose from 8.15bn m3 in 2020 to 11.33bn m3 in 2022, indicating significant growth and development in tapping into its unconventional natural gas potential.
