Siemens To Build Dubai CCGT

German turbine maker, Siemens, said December 19 that it has signed a contract to build the most efficient power plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It did not disclose the contract's value.

Signed by Siemens, Dubal (part of Emirates Global Aluminium) and Abu Dhabi state holding, Mubadala, it will see the development of a 600 MW combined cycle (CCGT) gas-fired power plant at an aluminium smelter in Jebel Ali, Dubai. The CCGT will be developed by a joint venture of Dubal and Mubadala. Siemens said it will be its first 'H-class' ultra-modern turbine supplied to a Gulf Cooperation Country.

Siemens said the H-class CCGT is expected to lower greenhouse gas emissions from the smelter's power generation by 10% and its nitrous oxide emissions by 58%, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions per tonne of aluminum produced at the Dubal smelter by 7%. Dubal vice-chairman Saeed Mohammed al-Tayer said the project, combining the CCGT and a reverse osmosis water desalination plant, will support objectives of the UAE's 'Vision 2021' plan.  (Photo credit: Siemens)
