Siemens To Supply Dubai Gas-Fired Plant

German turbine-maker Siemens said June 26 has received an order from the United Arab Emirates.

The order, value of which was not disclosed, is for three SGT5-4000F gas turbines which are to be used in Unit H Phase 4 of the Al Aweer power plant complex 35km from Dubai city centre.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) awarded the project's engineering procurement and construction (EPC) contract to Siemens in a consortium led by the Egypt-based company El Sewedy Electric Co, through its subsidiary Elsewedy Power.

Siemens has worked with Elsewedy already, most notably in Egypt where Siemens in 2015 signed a €8bn ($9bn) order to build three giant gas-fired plants that will add 14.4 gigawatts (GW) to the grid.

With an electrical generating capacity of about 815 megawatts, the new turbines for Dubai will increase the total output of the Al Aweer power plant complex to more than 2.8 GW, said Siemens, adding that the commercial commissioning of the three gas turbine trains is scheduled for spring 2020. The new peak-load plant is intended to cover particularly high energy demand in Dubai's hot summer months.

Around two-thirds of Dewa's total installed power plant capacity, amounting to approximately 10.2 GW, is based on Siemens technology, the German manufacturer noted.
