Singapore, Qatar sign MoU on LNG, low carbon tech

Singapore and Qatar have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on LNG and low-carbon technology, Singapore’s ministry of state for trade and industry said on June 21.

The MoU was signed by Singapore's minister of state for trade and industry, Low Yen Ling, and the Qatari minister of state for energy affairs and president & CEO of QatarEnergy, Saad Bin Sherida Al Kaabi. The signing took place during Singapore’s president Halimah Yacob's state visit to Qatar.

“Natural gas is the cleanest-burning fossil fuel and will continue to be an important fuel for many countries, including Singapore, even as low-carbon alternatives are being developed for large-scale deployment,” the ministry said. “Governments should work together to continue strengthening LNG supply chains while collaborating on low-carbon technologies to achieve their decarbonisation objectives.”

The MoU underscores the shared commitment of Singapore and Qatar to ensure stable and resilient LNG procurement and supply chains for energy security, the ministry added. It also recognises carbon capture and storage (CCS) as a crucial component of clean, secure, and affordable energy.

Minister Low highlighted the importance of deepening collaboration with key energy partners such as Qatar for Singapore's energy resilience and security.

“As a small state with limited natural energy resources, deepening the collaboration and engagement with key energy partners such as Qatar will strengthen our own energy resilience and security. We look forward to further strengthening our bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of our economies and people,” Low said.
