SK Holdings Materials, ExxonMobil team up for blue ammonia

SK Holdings Materials, a unit of South Korea’s SK group, has entered into a partnership with US major ExxonMobil to produce and import blue ammonia, it said on February 22.

ExxonMobil plans to build a facility to produce blue ammonia in Baytown, Texas. SK Holding Materials is looking to support the transition to clean energy in the domestic coal power generation market by introducing blue ammonia and supplying it as a power generation fuel.

"We will supply blue ammonia as an energy source that can replace the main fuel for domestic coal power generation in the future, and create an environment that produces electricity while reducing carbon emissions," said an official from SK Holdings Materials.

In addition, SK Holdings Materials plans to expand cooperation with ExxonMobil to develop a carbon reduction solution business in the mid-to-long-term.
