As such, by stopping the project, the EU is scoring its biggest own goal ever - and risks to lose out against China and the US in the energy fight about the new status quo.

Taking a closer look, the American pressure is simple Mathematics: Once the South Stream reaches its full capacity of 63 billion cubic meters, it will generate an USD 23.94 billion income for Russia's Gazprom as calculated with current prices. As such, the US has 23.94 billion very good reasons to do everything in its power to stop the project, especially if oil lobbyists in Washington believe that part of this money could also land in their pockets.
