SPSE, Elengy to develop CO2 transport, export infrastructure in France

Pipeline operator SPSE and LNG terminal operator Elengy announced on June 3 their collaboration to develop CO2 transport, liquefaction, and export infrastructure for industrial companies in France’s Rhone Valley and the Fos-sur-Mer industrial port area.

The project aims to connect industrial sites in the Rhone Valley to a liquefaction and export terminal at Fos-sur-Mer. This infrastructure will help establish a carbon capture and storage (CCS) chain in one of France's most industrialised regions.

Additionally, these infrastructures will support the development of carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) projects currently under study in the region. SPSE's pipeline network and Elengy's terminals at Fos-sur-Mer are existing assets that can be reused or pooled, the companies stated.

The companies plan to identify CO2 emitters and CCU project sponsors interested in committing to the development of the project and its infrastructure by 2030.

SPSE owns and operates a network of pipelines from the ports of Fos-sur-Mer and Lavera to refineries and petrochemical sites in the Rhone Valley and Upper Rhine Region. SPSE also operates a liquid hydrocarbon depot based at Fos-sur-Mer.

Elengy has been operating the Fos Tonkin LNG terminal since 1972 and the Fos Cavaou terminal since 2010.
