Strike delays start of Walyering gas field in WA
Sydney-listed Strike Energy on July 3 announced that the commissioning of the Walyering gas field in Western Australia has been delayed. The delay is attributed to adverse weather conditions and extended timelines for the procurement and delivery of necessary materials and services. As a result, the commissioning of the field will be pushed back to the third quarter of 2023.
Strike said it is actively working to mitigate the impact of these delays and intends to provide further updates and a more precise timeline for the first gas delivery once the facility's construction reaches mechanical completion.
The Walyering gas field is being developed by the EP447 joint venture, in which Strike operates with a 55% interest, while Talon Energy holds the remaining 45% interest. The development of the field was approved following successful appraisal drilling, specifically the Walyering 5 and 6 wells, which confirmed significant reserves and contingent resources.
The field boasts a gross 2P reserve of 54 petajoules (PJ) and a gross 2C resource of 32 PJ. Additionally, there are associated condensates estimated at approximately 0.8mn barrels of oil equivalent.
The first gas sales from the Walyering gas field are expected to take place during Q3/23, with 36.5 PJ of gas contracted to be sold to Santos on a firm basis over five years.
Strike said that the Walyering facility, located near the major Southwest gas market, will have one of the lowest carbon intensities among current Western Australia domestic gas supplies. The facility will rely entirely on solar energy and battery storage for its power requirements.
Strike sanctioned the Walyering gas field for development in August last year.
