YLE: Stubb confirms: LNG gas terminal to Finland

The prime ministers of Finland and Estonia met on Thursday in concert with the EU summit to continue discussion on the location of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal serving a new joint gas pipeline constructed by both countries. Prime Minister Alexander Stubb says the countries have decided to build the larger of two potential terminals in Finland, but says talks will continue next month.

Plans to build a joint liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline connecting Finland to Estonia and the Baltic gas network have been in the works for ages, but the two countries can’t seem to decide the specifics, such as where the terminals serving the pipeline would be located. As an increasingly belligerent Russia clamps down on its gas services in Europe, both Finland and Estonia are under growing pressure to connect to other existing Baltic and European gas networks.

Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas and Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb met to discuss the matter Thursday evening in Brussels, as both were attending the EU summit there. Stubb said the two heads of state had made progress on the issue, but talks would continue in November.
