Sweden bans fossil fuel extraction in symbolic move
Sweden's government announced on June 8 it had banned the extraction of oil, gas and coal, even though the country does not produce practically any hydrocarbons at present and has only negligible reserves of them.
The government said that by introducing the ban, which will come into effect at the start of next month, Sweden would lead the way in accelerating the climate transition. It will also introduce tighter rules for extraction from alum shale.
