Thai Egco wins LNG import licence
Bangkok-listed utility Electricity Generating Public Co (Egco) has secured a licence to import LNG into Thailand, it said on July 22 in a stock exchange filing. The company had applied for the licence late last year.
Thailand’s Energy Regulatory Commission has allowed the company to import LNG to the amount of 200,380 metric tons (mt)/year. The licence is valid for 10 years. Egco will supply LNG to its three power plants: the 256 MW Banpong power plant, which requires 54,000 mt/yr of LNG; the 122 MW Klongluang plant, which needs 27,000 mt/yr; and the 100-120 MW Cogen Replacement plant which would use 119,000 mt/yr of LNG.

The company said it plans to start importing LNG by end of this year. The full import capacity is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of next year. The LNG is expected to come from Asia and Africa, it said. "This import of LNG will support the fuel cost management for power generation and open investment opportunities for Egco Group in the fuel business,” the company said.
In addition to Egco, six other companies hold LNG import and trade licences: state-run PTT Global LNG and Egat, as well as private entities Gulf Energy Development, B Grimm LNG, Hin Kong Power Holding and Siam Cement Group.
