Tokyo Gas launches project for e-methane production with Yokohama City

Tokyo Gas on August 29 announced the launch of a joint demonstration project with Yokohama City, building on an agreement reached in January 2022. The project aims to produce e-methane using reclaimed water and digester gas.

Reclaimed water, which is filtered water from treated sewage, and digester gas, a biogas generated during the treatment of sewage sludge, will be transported to the methanation demonstration facility at Tokyo Gas Yokohama Techno Station. These materials will be used as raw inputs for producing hydrogen and e-methane.

Since July 2023, Tokyo Gas has also been advancing a carbon capture and utilisation joint demonstration project, where CO2 separated and captured from exhaust gas at the Yokohama City Resource Recycling Bureau Tsurumi Plant is used as a raw material for methanation.

In this expanded regional collaboration, the reclaimed water and digester gas generated at the Northern Sewerage Center will also be transported to the methanation demonstration facility. These resources will serve as raw water for hydrogen production via water electrolysis and as raw CO2 for e-methane production.

The project aims to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of this environmentally-conscious regional collaboration model as a step toward future carbon neutrality.
