TotalEnergies and partners in Cameron LNG CCS plan

French major TotalEnergies said May 23 it would work with Sempra Infrastructure, Mitsui and Mitsubishi to develop the Hackberry Carbon Sequestration (HCS) project at Cameron LNG in Louisiana.

HCS will capture CO2 at the 12mn mt/yr brownfield Cameron LNG facility, treat and transport it about 10 km away, where it will be sequestered permanently in a saline aquifer through an injection well with a capacity of up to 2mn/yr of CO2. The HCS partners filed an application with the US Environmental Protection Agency for authorisations in August 2021 to build the CO2 injection well, the first such application to be accepted by the EPA in Louisiana.

“We are pleased to join forces with our partners to significantly reduce CO₂emissions at Cameron LNG export terminal, thus enabling us to supply our customers with low-carbon LNG, a key fuel for the energy transition and a valuable asset for diversifying Europe’s energy supply,” said Thomas Maurisse, senior vice president LNG at TotalEnergies.

Sempra Infrastructure Justin Bird said HCS was the first of the company’s net zero solutions projects.

“This project is expected to be among the first North America carbon capture facilities designed to receive and store CO₂ from multiple sources, and our goal is for this facility to set the gold standard for safe and permanent CO₂ storage,” he said.

Development of HCS remains subject to definitive agreements, requisite permit approvals and final investment decisions by all partners.
