TotalEnergies pledges to protect biodiversity at Arctic LNG-2

TotalEnergies has committed to protect biodiversity at the Arctic LNG-2 project in Russia's far north, the French company reported on September 30.

The energy company has published an environmental, safety and heath impact assessment and a biodiversity implementation strategy on its website for the project, which is due to export its first gas in 2023.

"These measures will be monitored by third-party organisations, including all of the international credit agencies that will be contributing to the project and have engaged in a demanding dialogue with the project team to reinforce its commitments on the base of International Finance Corp Performance Standard 6," TotalEnergies said.

TotalEnergies has a 10% interest in Arctic LNG-2, which is operated by Russia's Novatek with a 60% interest. Other partners include China's CNOOC and CNPC with 10% each and a consortium of Japan's Mitsui and JOGMEC with a further 10%. The group took a final investment decision on the project in 2019, but they are still seeking external financing to cover some of its $21bn cost.
