UK Glengorm appraisal well turns up dry

Chinese oil firm CNOOC's first appraisal well at the 2019 Glengorm gas discovery has turned up dry, project partner Energean reported on April 19.

"The Glengorm South appraisal well contained no commercial hydrocarbons," Energean said in its 2020 financial results. It noted that the existing Glengorm North discovery and the Glengorm Central appraisal well, due to be spudded shortly, were considered independent of Glengorm South.

The Glengorm find was made at licence P2215 in January 2019, when a well was drilled to a 5,056-m depth and encountered 37.6 m of net gas and condensate pay zones. Recoverable resources were estimated at nearly 250mn barrels of oil equivalent, and it was hailed as the biggest gas discovery in the UK since Culzean in 2008.

Glengorm's reservoirs are characterised by very high pressures and temperatures, posing a challenge to development. But CNOOC is hoping to tie the field back to other projects in the area like Elgin/Frankin and Culzean. The Chinese firm operates Glengorm with a 50% interest, while France's Total has 25% and Energean a further 25%, which it acquired through the takeover of Edison's upstream business in December 2020.
