UK government reiterates backing for shale gas: press
The UK government has expressed its support for shale gas projects that can be performed without safety or sustainability concerns, Reuters reported March 9.
UK business secretary Kwasi Kwartgeng told the House of Commons the government "has always been clear" it would support safe and sustainable shale gas exploration but would take a "precautionary approach."

A moratorium to suspend horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing of shale gas reservoirs in England was introduced in 2019, following an existing Scottish restriction made four years previously. Some lawmakers have argued restarting shale in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine could help Europe lessen purchases of Russian gas. Just 5% of the UK's gas consumption is sourced from Russia, but the global price surge will still impact its energy markets.
