Ukraine Considers Gas From Slovakia
Ukraine is considering importing gas from Slovakia, a government minister has indicated.
Gas from the neighbouring country is one of two options for diversifying gas sources from Europe, Minister for Energy, Eduard Stavytskyi, said, quoted by agencies.
At the same time, Russian media reports that German utility RWE might provide Ukraine with gas from Slovakia, citing the source in the ministry.
Another possibility is that Ukraine could import gas through Turkish LNG terminals.
Kiev conducts an ongoing search to lessen its gas dependence on Moscow, especially after two major cut-offs caused winter misery in the first decade of this century.
Last year, Ukraine imported approximately 33 billion cubic meters of gas, including 25 billion from Russia and 0.06bn from RWE.
Ukraine has also started gas imports through Polish pipelines following the respective agreement with RWE Supply & Trading GmbH in November 2012.
