Ukraine Pumped Around 200 mcm into UGS Last Week

Ukraine has accumulated 16.3 bcm of natural gas reserves in its underground gas storages (UGS), said Naftogaz in a press release issued on Tuesday.

‘This level of stored gas is the second highest in Europe, after Germany,’ the company wrote.

According to the data released by Naftogaz, the level reached in September 2014 is 14% or 2.2 bcm higher than in September 2013.

‘These gas reserves will be used to meet the needs of Ukrainian consumers during the winter heating season of 2014-2015 and demonstrate Ukraine's commitment to meeting its own energy demand.’

Naftogaz added that it can still inject gas in its UGS facilities.

"Ukraine has the largest amount of UGS capacity in Europe, so at present Ukraine is one of the leaders in terms of stored gas reserve volumes. Although Ukrainian UGS are only 51% full, Germany and Italy have almost no spare capacity in their UGS for further natural gas accumulation: their UGS are over 90% full", the chairman of the board of Ukrtransgas, Ihor Prokopiv, explained in the communiqué.

According to the latest data from Ukrtransgas, Ukraine pumps 34.9 mcm of natural gas per day into its UGSs. Other reports suggest the country pumped 188 million cubic meters of gas into underground storage facilities from September 14 through September 21.
