Uniper begins using bioLNG production capacity at Gate terminal

Dusseldorf-based Uniper has commenced using the bioLNG production capacity to convert biomethane into bioLNG at the Gate terminal in Rotterdam, the company announced on July 30. 

The decision marks another step in developing a fully integrated biomethane-bioLNG supply chain within Uniper, the company added. The bioLNG produced at the Gate terminal is certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) scheme.

The biogas, sourced from one of the EU member states, is upgraded to biomethane by removing substances such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide, and is then fed into the Dutch natural gas grid. At the Gate exit point, the LNG terminal takes over the biomethane and liquefies it using the terminal’s existing infrastructure. The liquefier has a capacity of about 100,000 tonnes/year and can be used by the existing shippers.

“The decarbonisation of the market for marine and truck fuels will require the use of several low to zero-carbon fuels. BioLNG is among the most important ones,” said Carsten Poppinga, chief commercial sfficer of Uniper.

In 2022, Uniper increased its capacity rights at Gate terminal, a joint venture of Vopak and Gasunie, by 1bn m3/year for three years. 

Uniper’s operations encompass power generation in Europe, global energy trading, and a broad gas portfolio. The company procures gas—including LNG—and other energy sources on global markets. Uniper also owns and operates gas storage facilities with a total capacity of more than 7bn m3.

Uniper intends to be completely carbon-neutral by 2040.
