US Ambassador to Poland on New Regulations

The United States ambassador to Poland says he hopes that interests of American companies will be taken into account in the process of shaping new oil and gas regulations in the country.

“We hope that when regulations are put forward for public consultation, opinions of our companies will be taken into account,” said Stephen Mull in a press interview.

Speaking to the Wprost Weekly, the ambassador answered questions concerning American-Polish relations and other international issues.  Asked about “impatience” of American companies waiting for a “green light” in Poland, Stephen Mull noted that  “businessmen always want regulations to be as simple as possible and formed quickly.”

“Decisions will be taken by the Polish side. The new law will have an impact on how attractive this sector becomes for investors” – reminded the U.S. ambassador.

He also commented “of course, Poland has to protect environment. This is a challenge for governments to create such a law, that will secure safety for local communities  and on the other hand will not discourage investors.”

The diplomat added that Americans take a risk of investing in exploration, hoping that “opportunities in Poland are opening up” and that U.S. companies “bring their know-how” to Poland.

In the interview “America Saves Europe” the ambassador also expressed the opinion that shale gas may be produced without any harm to natural environment and added that president Obama does not approve projects until their impact on environment is sufficiently examined.

Last week Polish ministry of environment announced long-awaited draft regulations will be put forward to public consultations in the coming days.

According to our sources, there are still some disagreements within the government.

Stephen Mull has been on the mission in Warsaw since July 2012, when he replaced Lee Feinstein.
