Vietnam Kicks Off Work on First Import Terminal

State-run PetroVietnam and PetroVietnam Gas October 28 started the construction work on the Thi Vai LNG import terminal, PetroVietnam said October 29.

The terminal will have a capacity of 1mn metric tons/year in the first phase, which is expected to be completed by 2022. The second phase, which will be finished by 2023, will see capacity being increased to 3mn mt/yr, the company said. The first phase will entail an investment of $285mn.

South Korea’s Samsung C&T was awarded the contract in June this year to build the Thi Vai terminal, Vietnam’s first. The terminal will have a 180,000-m3 tank, a vapour transmission facility and a docking station. It will be located 70-km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. Once operational, the terminal will supply gas to Nhon Trach power plant and industrial customers.
