Wartsila to upgrade Swedish bioLNG plant
Finnish technology company Wartsila will supply biogas upgrading and liquefaction units for a Swedish bioLNG plant, expanding its production capacity from 20 to 45 tonnes/day, it said on December 11.
The new plant, located in Linkoping and owned by Tekniska Verken, a leader in biogas and bioLNG production, will be an extension of an existing biomethane and bioLNG facility supplied by Wartsila.
"By expanding our capacity for biomethane in both gaseous and liquid form, we are complementing our existing upgrading and liquefaction plant, as well as continuing to contribute in the journey towards our vision," said Anna Lovsen, CEO of Svensk Biogas and business area manager for biogas at Tekniska Verken.
Wartsila's patented VAC vacuum technology will be incorporated into the upgrader, offering greater flexibility for heat supply and allowing Tekniska Verken to utilise their existing district heating network. This approach reduces energy consumption and promotes resource efficiency.
The plant produces biomethane from organic waste, including food waste, and wastewater treatment residue. The resulting bioLNG will be used as fuel for the transport sector and industry in Sweden, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
"At Tekniska Verken's subsidiaries, Svensk Biogas bioLNG filling stations for heavy vehicles represent a circular business model," Wartsila stated. "It is fully renewable and, depending upon the feedstock from which it is produced, can even be carbon negative."
Wartsila's scope of work includes supplying the Puregas CA biogas upgrading system, a mixed refrigerant (MR) biogas liquefaction solution, a 250 m3 storage tank, an export station, and a boil-off gas module. The equipment is scheduled for delivery in December 2024, and the new plant is expected to be operational in the first half of 2025.
