New European Sanctions Against Russia

Western countries said that there is evidence suggesting that Russia “continues to transfer weapons across the border,” supporting separatists in their military confrontation with Ukraine. They also agreed on the need to impose new sanctions on Moscow.

US President Barack Obama spoke with Germany’s Angela Merkel, France’s Francois Hollande, UK’s David Cameron and Italy’s Matteo Renzi about the developments in Ukraine, with an eye on the international response to the MH17 disaster.

“Leaders agreed that the international community should therefore impose further costs on Russia and specifically that Ambassadors from across the EU should agree a strong package of sectoral sanctions as swiftly as possible. They agreed that the EU and United States should continue to work together to exert pressure on Russia to change course and to engage in a political resolution to the crisis before more innocent lives are lost,” said a British spokesperson on Monday evening.
