Wisconsin power utility buys gas-fired plant

Wisconsin-based Dairyland Power Cooperative said August 26 it had entered into an agreement to acquire a gas-fired power plant as part of an effort to clean up its portfolio.

Dairyland said it would purchase the RockGen Energy, a 503-MW gas-fired plant in southern Wisconsin, from an affiliate of Starwood Energy. Terms were not disclosed.

"RockGen will help meet our members' power supply needs as we transition to more renewable resources," Dairyland CEO Brent Ridge said. "Safely delivering reliable and sustainable electricity to our members is critical as we continue to diversify Dairyland's energy portfolio and lower carbon intensity.”

The RockGen facility is a dual-fuel powered plant that runs primarily on natural gas.

Wisconsin’s grid is greening up. US financial services company ORIX in May completed an equity investment in a Wisconsin biorefinery that uses dairy farm waste as a source for renewable natural gas.

Dairyland services more than 500,000 customers across four states, including Wisconsin. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of the year.
