Wood to undertake concept study for Greater Sunrise project

Global engineering firm Wood has been selected as the lead specialist consultant for an independent study for the Sunrise joint venture’s (SJV) Greater Sunrise development, the company announced on July 2.

Wood will deliver a concept study for the Greater Sunrise development, considering engineering, technology, financing, commercial structures, fiscal, environmental, health and safety, and socioeconomic drivers, including local content. The study, targeted for completion by Q4 2024, will support the joint venture in advancing the development to the next stage.

The Sunrise development, located approximately 450 km north-west of Darwin and 150 km south of Timor-Leste, comprises the Sunrise and Troubadour gas and condensate fields. These fields contain an estimated contingent resource of 5.3 trillion ft3 of dry gas and 226mn barrels of condensate.

Woodside had previously proposed piping the gas to Darwin, Australia, to leverage existing infrastructure. At the same time, the Timor-Leste government advocated for an onshore LNG plant to foster job creation and industrialisation within the country. A focus area of the study will be delivery options, comparing the viability of processing the gas in Timor-Leste for LNG sales versus transporting it to Australia.

Timor Gas owns 56.56% of the project, Woodside Energy holds a 33.44% stake, and Osaka Gas Australia owns the remaining 10%. The project was approved by the Timor-Leste government in November 2023.
