Woodside Bullish About Myanmar Operations

Woodside Petroleum is extremely optimistic about its operations in Myanmar.

After making two back to back gas discoveries in Myanmar in last six months, the company believes its strong partnerships in Myanmar will greatly enhance chances of commercialisation.

“We’re especially pleased with our recent exploration success in Myanmar where we have announced two gas discoveries over the last six months. These back-to-back discoveries are at opposite ends of the Rakhine Basin. We believe the proximity of these wells to nearby infrastructure and our strong partnerships in Myanmar enhance commercialisation possibilities,” Chairman Michael Chaney said last week.

In February, Woodside discovered gas at the Thalin-1A exploration well, located offshore Myanmar. The discovery intersected approximately 62 m of net gas pay within the primary target interval. The gas discovery at Thalin-1A follows an earlier gas discovery by Woodside at the Shwe Yee Htun-1 well in Block A-6.

Overall, Woodside now has interests in a total of six blocks in Myanmar – a 47,000 square kilometre acreage position.

“We are close to completing more than 30,000 square kilometres in 3D seismic surveys over the permits,” Chaney added.
